His work focuses on the archaeology of the contemporary past and more specifically on the dark side of modernity: conflict, dictatorship and colonialism. She is a co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/caucasusheritage.cornell.edu\/\">Caucasus Heritage Watch<\/a> and directs the <a href=\"https:\/\/archaeology.cornell.edu\/afterlife-socialist-modernity\">Afterlife of Socialist Modernity<\/a> project. Smith is Distinguished Professor of Arts and Sciences in Anthropology at Cornell University and Director of the Cornell Institute for Archaeology and Material Studies. His a a co-founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/aragats.arts.cornell.edu\/\">Project ArAGATS<\/a>, a two decade long archaeological research program in central Armenia. He is also a co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/caucasusheritage.cornell.edu\/\">Caucasus Heritage Watch<\/a>.
